Anonymous hacks Texas Republican Party website against abortion law

by

The Texas Republican Party is now asking for donations to secure its website from further attacks from Anonymous and “Pro-abortion activists.”

The official website of the Texas Republican Party was hacked and defaced by the Anonymous hacktivist collective on Saturday the 12th. The group carried out the cyber attack to protest the new abortion law in Texas which bans abortions at about six weeks from the patient’s last menstrual period.

As seen by Hackread.com, Anonymous breached The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP (“Grand Old Party”) website (texasgop.org) and replaced its homepage with the content of its own. The content displayed graphic language and images against the Republican Party.

It is worth noting that this type of attack is called website defacement in which the visual appearance of a targeted website or a web page is changed to what hackers want to display – It can be politically motivated messages or protest for human rights, etc.

In the case of Anonymous; the GOP’s website was defaced with messages urging visitors to join #OperationJane or #OpJane. For your information, according to Anonymous, #OperationJane is an operation “that highlights the failures of Texas lawmakers to protect women’s reproductive freedom.”

GOP acknowledged the attack

Hackread.com can confirm that The GOP has acknowledged suffering cyber attacks from Anonymous.

At the time of publishing this article; the targeted site was redirected to the donation page for the party powered by WinRed, a platform that helps conservative and center-right groups in online fundraising.

“While the nation paused over the weekend in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 the Republican Party of Texas website was hacked,” The GOP’s website homepage said. “Pro-abortion activists targeted us because of our strong support for the Heartbeat Act. This attack adds to a growing list of actions by the radical left who tries to silence anyone that disagrees with them.”

What’s noteworthy is that The GOP is asking for donations to secure its website from further attacks. “Stand with us now against these cybercriminals and their brazen attacks by rushing a contribution to harden our digital defenses,” requests the website.

What is Texas Abortion Law

For those who are unaware of the State of Texas new Abortion Law (aka Texas Heartbeat Act); it all started on September 1, 2021, when the State passed the Texas Heartbeat Act outlawing abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detectable, which typically occurs in the sixth week of pregnancy.

The bill states that the only exception for abortions, past six weeks, is in response to a medical emergency. The law makes no exception for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, though they may be aborted before fetal heartbeat detection.

Additionally, the law [PDF] allows any Texas resident to sue abortion providers or anyone assisting a woman seeking an abortion. The law states that any Texas resident, without any vested interest, may sue anyone that performs an abortion in violation of the statute, as well as anyone who “aids or abets the performance or inducement of an abortion, including paying for or reimbursing the costs of an abortion through insurance or otherwise.”
